MICHIGAN MAJORS

Tom Smallwood of Saginaw won the 39th Budweiser Michigan Majors Championship at Cherry Hill Lanes in Dearborn Heights with a thrilling 264-257 triumph over Jim Porter of Lansing .

Smallwood took home the top prize of $1,600 after claiming the top seed for the stepladder finals with a nine-game total of 2,231.

Porter received $800 after qualifying second and defeating Dan Frank of Bay City 238-213 en route to the finals.

Frank qualified fifth and beat Chuck Morris of Redford 258-205 and Tim Deatherage of Westland 235-182 on the way.

Frank cashed for $700, Deatherage $600 and Morris $500.

John Nolen of Waterford Township was the only Oakland casher for $130.

OLD TIMERS TOURNAMENT

The 76th Annual Old Timers Bowling Tournament was a huge success with 586 bowlers participating in the one-day event at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park . Bowlers came from as far away as San Diego and others from Buffalo , Minneapolis and Altoona , Penn. also participated.

William “Scotty” Laughland of Windsor , 76 years of age, paced the event with a 777 series on games of 266, 299 and 212.

In the under 50 group Keith Pinchback of Harrison Township was tops with 725, followed by Thomas Darichuk of Lincoln Park (707) and Ernest Segura Jr. of Brownstown (702).

Chuck Graddick of Eastpointe led the 50-59 age category with 720. John Cisco of Warren (719) and Rick Eiermann of Garden City (705) were second and third respectively.

Theo Tolbert of Ecorse paced the 60-64 group with 706, followed by Bill Schepke of Shelby Township (701) and Eugene Szweda of Southgate (683).

In the 65-69 age group William Dewid of Warren had 697 the lead. Archie Fanville of Ecorse (696) and Lloyd Pruitt of Detroit (688) finished second and third.

Richard Fisk of Canton led the 70-74 category with 682, followed by Richard Pokriefka of Clinton Township (665) and Roland Barnes of Dearborn Heights (662).

Buddy Calloway of Allen Park (712), Nicolas Perez of Detroit (657) and Joseph Patterson of Detroit (654) topped the 75-79 age group.

In the 80 and over age group Oscar Hovsepian of Dearborn Heights won with 630, followed by Jack Dahlstrom of Redford (610) and Ameen Solomon of Bloomfield Hills (594).

The Old Timers Tournament is held annually on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and is open to male bowlers over the age of 40 who have been associated with bowling for 25 years or more.

MORE BIG SCORES

MDUSBC President Libbi Fletcher and Century Bowl Association Representative John Rossetto presented two teams from the Monday Classic League their awards for top nationwide performances during the 2005-06 season Monday night at Century Bowl in Waterford Township .

The I 2 Live Bowl team shot their team series score of 2,947 on Dec. 19, 2005. Their series placed second in the nation in the three-men, one-woman team series category. Their score ranks fourth in the all-time local records. The top score in the nation during the 2005-06 season was 2,962.

Nick Dallas of Keego Harbor led the team with 877. Others on the team were Pat Brown of Canton (783), James Campau of Orion (659) and Laura Campau of Orion (628).

The Bowlers Choice / Buds’ Pro Shop team shot a four-person team game score of 1,123 on May 1, 2006 placing second in the nation in the four-men team game category. The top score in the nation was 1,124. This also set a new mark for the MDUSBC eclipsing the old record of 1,112. It is the highest four-person team game ever shot in Michigan .

Team members were Travis Franz of Waterford Township (300), Matthew Owen of Waterford Township (279), Richard Dolph of Waterford Township (244) and John Nolen of Waterford Township (300).

Dallas also received recognition for the top series in the MDUSBC in the 2005-06 season with 877 on games of 299, 300 and 278. His series is tied for fifth all-time in the local records. The MDUSBC record for individual series is 879.
