USBC CONVENTION NEWS

The United States Bowling Congress conducted the second annual USBC Convention and Annual Meeting in Nashville , Tenn. last week with some surprises.

There were 12 proposed bylaw changes, four proposed changes to league rules and one proposed change to tournament rules included in the legislative session attended by over 1,300 delegates. The first elections were also conducted.

There were 28 workshops conducted over two days dealing with issues that face bowling in general. General workshop topics were credibility, delivery network, grow the sport and youth development.

Brandi Chastain, past member of the U.S. national women’s soccer from 1988 until 2004, was the keynote speaker. Her message was to play hard, have fun and put the fun back into competitive sports.

Several awards were given out at the annual meeting including the late Dan Ottman of Troy , who was honored with the Joyce Deitch Trailblazer Award for his contributions to bowling. Accepting for Ottman was Mark Hurttgam of New Baltimore and a member of the Metro Detroit USBC Association delegation.

The Strategic Planning Committee report unveiled the new vision of the USBC being “The vision of the United States Bowling Congress is to grow the sport”. This will be accomplished with more people recognizing bowling as a sport and more people participating in bowling as a sport. This single vision of the organization will drive all aspects towards achieving the vision.

Elections for five USBC Board positions were conducted. Each of the positions were contested with at least two candidates. Elected were Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of North Richland Hills , Tex. , Sherisa Nailor of Mechanicsburg , Pa. , James Peters of Naperville , Ill. , Michael Italia of Limerick , Pa. and Jim Sturm of Dunbar, W. Va.

In the legislative session five bylaw changes were approved and seven defeated. Approved bylaw changes included clarifying that absentee and proxy votes were not permitted; some board housekeeping issues to be in compliance with Wisconsin corporate law; and a proposed bylaw submitted by the Metro Detroit USBC Association which would allow local associations to elect board members by plurality rather than majority provided it is in the local bylaws.

The most contentious bylaw proposal that was defeated would have required local and state associations to merge by March 15, 2009.

Two league rule changes were approved. The first approved was an affirmation of an interim rule previously approved the USBC Board which makes honor scores bowled in unopposed pre or post bowled situations ineligible for recognition. The other rule change increased the amount of time to file a protest in the final two weeks of the schedule and other situation under USBC Rule 119 from 48 hours to 72 hours.

The only tournament rule change added a provision for tournaments to pay a different prize ratio for special features as long as it was disclosed on the entry blank.

The next USBC Convention and Annual Meeting will take place May 6-10, 2008 in Kansas City , Kan.
