GAVIE TOURNAMENT

The league bowling season is fast approaching and one of the ways to know is that the 71st Annual John Gavie Memorial Tournament will be held on Monday, Aug. 20.

Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park will host the event as it has for as many years as I can remember. It is one of the largest one-day tournaments around and averages over 100 teams each year.

There are three divisions. They are open, women’s and senior. The Open Division is based on actual scores, while the others are based on 80 percent handicap from 1,050.

The cost is only $100 per team, $20 per bowler to participate in the traditional opening to the bowling season in Metro Detroit. The Open and Women’s Divisions will bowl at 7 p.m. and the Senior Division at 3 p.m.

This year’s event is dedicated to Mike Koivuniemi of Hartland in the Open Division, Leona Obuchowski of Ferndale in the Women’s Division and the late Tom Dorazio in the Senior Division. Dedication will take place prior to the evening event.

Last year the Open Division was won by Belmar II / Cozy Inn with Dick Beattie of Dearborn, Rick Eiermann of Garden City, Jim Grant of Kimball, Harley Trumbull of New Boston and Dave Eatmon of Ferndale.

The Total Plastics team won the Women’s Division. Team members were Maria DeYoung of Clinton Township , Linda Bird Clinton Township , Danielle Eatmon of Warren, Melissa Lynch of Macomb and Kamla Shefferly of St. Clair Shores .

The Cosma Seniors captured the Senior Division. J.C. Campbell of Macomb , Len Cianciolo of Warren, Denny Sullivan of Waterford Township, Ted Starr of Waterford Township and Bob Garrett of Waterford Township were the members.

Additionally at scholarship tournament will be held on Sunday, Aug. 19 for youth bowlers. An additional $600 in scholarship money is available in this event.
