GAVIE TOURNAMENT RESULTS

 

A record 112 teams competed in the 71st Annual John P. Gavie Invitational at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park to kick off the bowling season in Metro Detroit.

 

There were 77 teams in the Open Division, 18 in the Senior Division and 17 in the Women’s Division.

 

The Westpointe BTA II team won the Open Division with a 3,498 score. Members of the team were Gerry Cruz of Dearborn, Darnell Hayes of Belleville , Tony Canfield of Westland , Terrance Bright of Canton and Andy Laich of Wayne .

 

In the Senior Division the Earl Roberts Associates team shot 3,195. Bill Haynes of Rochester Hills, Phil Horowitz of West Bloomfield, Enrico Odorico of Macomb , Joe Fitzsimmons of Waterford Township and Ed Austreng of Waterford Township were members of the team.

 

The Chill team from Detroit captured the Women’s Division with a 3,180 tally. Team members were Estella Secrest, Nina Brown, Mary Marsh, Carol Holmes-Brown and Wanda Jones.

 

Novella Daniels of Harper Woods paced all players with an 806 series with games of 280, 279 and 247. Floyd Drinkhorn of Macomb and Dan Kelsey of Novi bowled perfect 300 games. Arnie Goldman of Inkster paced the men with 795 and Charles Graddick of Detroit the seniors with 690.

 

In a companion tournament, 73 youth bowlers competed for scholarships. There was $600 awarded in both boys and girls divisions to the top three places in each division on a $300, $200 and $100 basis.

 

The girls division was captured by Brianna Stieler of Waterford Township with a handicap three-game total of 819, an actual series of 741 on games of 229, 278 and 234. Olivia Sikora of Southgate with 732 and Sara Litteral of Chesterfield Township with 689 were second and third respectively.

 

Joe Tomczak of Allen Park paced the boys division with a handicap score of 807, which was an actual series of 729 on games of 221, 231 and 277. He was followed in the standings by David Kotcher of Sterling Heights with 762 and Marco Wayne of Ortonville with 729.

 

Frank Gavie, nephew of the late John Gavie, commented, “My uncle John would have been smiling if he was here this year. It is quite an accomplishment to put a tournament together at this time during the summer months. Credit goes to the various members of the tournament committee and sponsors whose support makes it all happen. Now we can start on next year.”

 

The annual Gavie Invitational is held the third Monday in August at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, the second largest bowling center in the United States with 94 lanes.
