YEAR IN REVIEW

 

January – Jeffrey Austreng of Waterford Township won the Metro Detroit USBC Association Masters Tournament at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park . John Nolen of Waterford Township finished fourth. The other Oakland County top finishers were Travis Raskey of South Lyon, Jason Battishill of Clarkston, Eric Tulley of Southfield and Jerry Owczarski of South Lyon.

 

February – Ken Mazur of Rochester Hills finished in the runner-up spot of the National Senior Bowling Association tournament at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights . Ed Austreng of Waterford Township had a second place finish in the NSBA tournament at Bowl One Lanes in Troy . John Bennett of Clarkston paced the qualifying rounds in the MDUSBC Senior Masters at Airway Lanes in Waterford Township . Lee Snow of Wixom won the title by remaining in the winner’s bracket and outlasting all others. Other top local finishers were Mitch Jabczenski of Novi, Jerry Owczarski of South Lyon, Ed Austreng of Waterford Township, Marvin Kipp of Oxford and Bennett. Kim Mystian of White Lake won the Pontiac 600 Club at Cherry Hill Lanes North. Fairlanes in Madison Heights was the primary center to raise money for Bowl for the Cure by netting $8,217.

 

March – Mark Milasinovich Jr. of Oxford was runner-up in the Budweiser Michigan Majors Match Game Championship at Parkway Lanes in Trenton . The late Dan Ottman of Troy was honored with the Joyce Deitch Trailblazer Awards at the United State Bowling Congress Convention in Nashville , Tenn. He received the award primarily for the great work he had done in promoting high level youth bowling.

 

April – Team E, captained by Floyd Speer of Waterford Township , captured the handicap team event at the MDUSBC Open Championship with a handicap score of 3,819 at Century Bowl in Waterford Township. Other members of the team were Jonathon Chamberlain of Waterford Township , Jody Paradis of Clarkston, Jeffery Shears of Clarkston and Jamie Peters of Waterford Township . The team also recorded the top actual team score of 3,585. Daniel Kelsey of Novi led the scratch and handicap singles with 833 and 895 respectively. David Skillman of Waterford Township recorded the top handicap all-events score with 2,366 and Jerry Owczarski of South Lyon the top actual all-events with 2,259.

 

May – The Ansara Team #3, captained by Lew Ansara of Farmington Hills , took top honors in the Michigan State USBC BA Tournament with an actual score of 3,654 and handicap score of 3,702. Members of the team were Eddie Grace III of Howell, Robert Rozycki of Allen Park , Harold Sullins of Chesterfield Township , Brian Hatcher of Roseville and Kenneth Wyatt of Sterling Heights . Ronald Shooks of White Lake and Steven Moran of Waterford Township took the lead in handicap doubles early in the tournament with a score of 1,626 and it held up for the rest of the tournament. The MDUSBC was awarded the 2008 USBC Youth Championships which include Century Bowl in Waterford Township as one of the qualifying centers of the prestigious Junior Gold Championships. Mike Busch of Waterford Township took home his second Budweiser Michigan Majors title at Nortel Lanes in Monroe .

 

June – Several local bowlers earned All-City honors including Jeffrey Austreng of Waterford Township , Gregory Brown of Southfield , Jeffrey Grego of Waterford Township , John Nolen of Waterford Township and Michael Busch of Waterford Township on the Men’s team. Jerry Owczarski of South Lyon captained the Senior Men’s team. He was joined by Mitchell Jabczenski Sr. of Novi, Lee Snow of Wixom and Edwin Austreng of Waterford Township . Carol Davis of Lake Orion captained the Senior Women’s team and was joined by Leona Obuchowski of Ferndale , Sheryl McMahan of Commerce Township , Carol Roberts of Ferndale and Carrol Sheridan of Rochester Hills. Bob Chamberlain Jr. of Holly won the Budweiser Michigan Majors Tournament at Belmar II Lanes in Trenton .

BOWLING ON TV THIS WEEKEND

 

While the PBA takes a couple of weeks off there won’t be any live bowling action on television. ESPN Classic will air some classic bowling on Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 12 noon. Saturday’s telecast will be the PBA Skills Challenge, Sunday will feature the 1995 Northwest Classic and Monday the 1995 PBA Jackson Senior Championship. The next live PBA telecast will be Sunday, Jan. 6.
