MDUSBC SENIOR MASTERS

 

The Metro Detroit USBC Association Senior Masters tournament qualifying wrapped up Sunday, Feb. 11 with Clarkston resident John Bennett leading the way with an eight-game total of 1,990 at Airway Lanes in Waterford Township . Bennett earned $50 for being high qualifier.

 

Bennett’s four-game blocks were 992 and 998, which included games of 279-246-245-222-248-275-248-227. Bennett won the 1977 Masters and 2004 Senior Masters. He will face George Lane of Chesterfield in his opening match.

 

Other notables going into match play on Feb. 17 are defending champion Roy Biggs of Canton who faces Steven Hubble of Westland; 2005 Senior Masters champion Ed Austreng of Waterford Township against Robert Szachta of Macomb; 1996 and 2002 Senior Masters champion Harley Trumbull of New Boston pitted against Marvin Kipp of Oxford; 1974, 1975 and 1981 Masters champion Richard Beattie of Dearborn versus Joseph Buffa of Macomb; and 1987 Masters champion Kenneth Lang of Eastpointe against Jerry Owczarski of South Lyon.

 

Other Oakland County seniors in match play are Mitchell Jabczenski of Novi against J.C. Campbell of Macomb; and Lee Snow of Wixom against Larry Best of Brownstown Township.

 

Advancing to the Super Senior rolloffs for players 60 years and older are Oliver Mabry of West Bloomfield and Ted Starr of Waterford Township .

 

Match play will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17 at Airway Lanes in Waterford Township . Airway Lanes is located at 4825 Highland Rd. , phone (248) 674-0424.

 

Lee Snow recorded the top game of 300.

The MDUSBC Masters Tournament is a USBC certified event operated by the Metro Detroit USBC Association, the largest local association of the United States Bowling Congress with more than 80,000 members.

NATIONAL SENIOR BOWLING ASSOCIATION

 

Ron LeChevalier of Detroit edged Ed Austreng of Waterford Township 213-212 to win the National Senior Bowling Association event at Bowl One Lanes in Troy and claim the top prize check of $1,000. Austreng settled for $500.

 

LeChevalier qualified 19th and proceeded to beat Ron Burgess of Plymouth 237-230, B.J. Galloway of Alpena 225-169, Larry Franz of Redford 210-199 and Mike Chapman of Ypsilanti 266-248 en route to the championship match.

 

Austreng qualified fifth and beat Ron Forton of Macomb Township 268-232, Phil Horowitz of West Bloomfield 186-178 and Bill Parker of Rockwood 226-201 on his way.

 

Other Oakland County cashers were Rod Harling of Oak Park ($150) and Horowitz ($150).

 

Enrico Odorico of Macomb Township recorded the top game of 279.
