NATIONAL SENIOR BOWLING ASSOCIATION

 

Jim Magolan of Shelby Township prevailed over Kan Mazur of Rochester Hills 233-199 in the National Senior Bowling Association at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights to win the top prize of $1,000.

 

Magolan qualified second in the field of 83 and beat David Karaska of Detroit 201-190, Rock Tomaszewski of Taylor 224-219 and Ed Austreng of Waterford Township 243-187 on his way to the final match.

 

Mazur qualified 17th and defeated Dave Eatmon of Ferndale 216-191, Fred Whitmore of Detroit 236-181, Mike Motrinc of Harrison Township 222-194 and Rick Capaldi of Canton 259-222. Mazur settled for $500.

 

Besides Mazur Oakland County was represented by Austreng for $275, Mark Hatchigian of Novi ($175), Phil Horowitz of West Bloomfield ($130), Jerry Owczarski of South Lyon ($130), Jim Hacht of Farmington Hills ($130), Richard Planko of Novi ($100), Mike Surdyk of Novi ($100), Dave Eatmon of Ferndale ($100) and Bill Haynes of Rochester Hills ($90).

 

Karaska had the high game of the tournament with 290.

MDUSBC SENIOR MASTERS

 

The Metro Detroit USBC Association Senior Masters Tournament qualifying is slated to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10 at Airway Lanes in Waterford Township .

 

The qualifying will be conducted in two squads on Feb. 10 with the bowlers returning on Sunday to complete the eight games. Those bowlers who bowl the first shift on Saturday will bowl the second shift on Sunday and vice-versa.

 

After qualifying is complete the field will be cut to the top 31 players plus defending champion Roy Biggs of Canton and return for double elimination match play beginning Saturday, Feb. 17. Matches consist of two games total pins.

 

First place will pay $1,500 with $1,000 for runner-up.

 

Notable entrants are Ed Austreng of Waterford Township (Senior Masters champion 2005), Dick Beattie of Dearborn (Masters 1974, 1980 & 1981), John Bennett of Clarkston (Masters 1977 & Senior Masters 2004) and Harley Trumbull Jr. of New Boston (Senior Masters 1996 & 2002).
