BUDWEISER MICHIGAN MAJORS

 

Mike Busch of Waterford Township won his second Budweiser Michigan Majors title with a 215-212 victory over Rick Gregor of Sterling Heights at Nortel Lanes in Monroe .

 

Busch qualified second for the stepladder and defeated Todd Sim of Belle River , Ontario 279-211 en route to the championship match. Busch took home the top prize of $1,000 after recording a nine-game qualifying total of 2,299.

 

In the championship match against Gregor, Busch left a 7-10 split in the pocket in the sixth frame digging a 33-pin hole for himself. He struck out in the ninth and 10th frames to force Gregor to roll two strikes in the 10th frame to win the match. Gregor left a 10 pin after achieving the first strike in the 10th.

 

Gregor took home $500 after recording a 2,304 qualifying score.

 

The qualifying rounds were record-breakers. Mike Norris Jr. of Livonia set an all-time six-game qualifying record when he shot 1,625 on games of 250, 289, 300, 258, 238 and 290. This eclipsed the previous record of 1,599 held by Nick Wissinger of Utica . The entire field averaged 229.68, overtaking the previous record of 227.87 from Sterling Lanes in 2004.

 

With the high scoring came perfect 300 games by Norris, Sim and Pat Brown of Westland . Recording 800 series were Doug Spicer of Canton (813), Rich Vargo of Comstock Park (801), Sim (836), Norris (839) and Busch (804).

 

The opening match of the stepladder finals found Norris defeating Terry Haines 226-202 before falling to Sim 221-203. Sim cashed for $400, Norris $350 and Haines $300.
