BUDWEISER MICHIGAN MAJORS

Shane Dufresne of Swartz Creek won his first title in the 40th Annual Budweiser Michigan Majors Championship tournament at Cherry Hill Lanes in Dearborn Heights with a 258-179 victory over Todd Sim of Belle River , Ontario .

Dufresne took home the top prize of $1,700 after leading the qualifying round with a six-game total of 1,492. He retained his lead throughout the semi-final round by posting a 2,152 score for nine games to become the top seed for the stepladder finals.

Sim qualified second and beat Kurt Lambert of Linwood 227-149 to advance to the championship match. He received a check for $800.

Earlier Lambert beat Matt Randall of Brownstown 258-220 and Harry Sullins of Chesterfield Township 59-49 in a two-frame rolloff after they tied at 196.

Lambert collected $600, Sullins $500 and Randall $400.

Dufresne had sliced his thumb at work prior to the tournament and opted to have it glued rather than stitches so he could bowl. It turned out to be a good choice.

“I’m really surprised,” said Dufresne. “I didn’t think I was going to be able to bowl. It’s a great tournament to win, this is fantastic, especially with the way my thumb was.”

Oakland County bowlers who cashed were Jeff Grego of Waterford Township for $230, John Nolen of Waterford Township $220, Harold Hughes of Auburn Hills $140 and Mark Milasinovich of Oxford $130.

The next MMBA event will be the Tournament of Champions on Dec. 8 at Taylor Lanes in Taylor . For more information contact Ken Charrette at (586) 775-2414.
