MDUSBC SUPER SENIOR MASTERS

 

John Ross Jr. of Vassar won the inaugural MDUSBC Super Senior Masters title and the top prize of $1,000 at Beech Lanes in Redford with a 235-162 triumph over Bob Arnold of Clinton Township . Arnold settled for $500.

 

Ross qualified 14th with a five-game total of 1,084. He won his first two matches 279-207 over Fred McClain of Allen Park and a 243-207 victory over Dick Beattie of Dearborn before falling to the loser’s bracket with a 216-205 loss to Arnold . Once in the loser’s bracket he beat McClain a second time 290-246, Gerrit DeMeulenaere 242-205 and John Wesley Sr. of Washington 246-220 for the right to face Arnold again.

 

In the finals Ross defeated Arnold 214-207 which put both players with one loss in the double elimination format before beating Arnold for the championship. Overall Ross averaged 233.7.

 

Arnold qualified second with 1,183 and proceeded to beat Ed Austreng of Waterford Township 214-207, John Bennett of Clarkston 210-202, Ross 216-205 and Wesley 203-174 before facing Ross again. He averaged 217.7.

 

Wesley was third for $400, while DeMeulenaere was fourth for $300.

 

Wesley qualified eighth with 1,107 and averaged 211.1 for the event. He remained in the winner’s bracket by beating Larry Martinez of Waterford Township 214-156, Archie Denard of Southfield 199-183 and DeMeulenaere 197-172 before falling to Arnold 203-174 to fall to the loser’s bracket where he lost to Ross.

 

DeMeulenaere qualified fourth with 1,132. He averaged 221.6 while beating Tom Spada of Troy 242-209, Phil Horowitz of West Bloomfield 224-183 before falling to Wesley the first time. He then beat John Bennett of Clarkston 241-143 before losing to Ross 242-205.

 

Ron Byrd Sr. of Clinton Township led the field of 73 with a five-game total of 1,204. In match play he lost to Denard 224-208, beat Martinez 215-184 before losing to Bennett 206-180.

 

Larry Dembek of Center Line won the special competition to non-qualifiers over the age of 70 with a 205-173 win over Ed Grant of Rochester Hills. Dembek took home $175 and Grant $150 for their efforts.

 

Other Oakland County cashers were John Bennett of Clarkston for $250, Tom Spada of Troy $225, Ed Austreng of Waterford Township $225, Philip Horowitz of West Bloomfield $200, Archie Denard of Southfield $200, Larry Martinez of Waterford Township $175, Joe Fitzsimmons of Waterford Township $125 and Bob Garrett of Waterford Township $100.

 

Sponsors of the MDUSBC Senior Masters were Turbo 2-N-1 Grips, Eastown Printing and Beech Lanes.

 

The MDUSBC Super Senior Masters Tournament is an USBC certified event operated by the Metro Detroit USBC Association, the largest local association of the United States Bowling Congress with more than 80,000 adult and youth members.
