PINS OVER AVERAGE CHALLENGE

One hundred forty league bowlers will gather at Airway Lanes in Waterford Township on Saturday, May 3 to vie for a top prize of $10,000 in the inaugural Pins Over Average (POA) Challenge.

The Metro Detroit USBC Association, Western Wayne County USBC Association and the Bowling Centers Association of Southeastern Michigan have teamed up in a program to bring excitement to USBC certified league bowling.

The bowlers qualified from their respective league by bowling the most pins over average in a single series during the qualifying period from mid-October 2007 through the end of February 2008. Bowlers only had to pay a one-time fee of $10 to be eligible to participate.

All competition will be based on the bowler’s highest current average. All contestants will bowl three games with the top half, based on pins over average, advancing to the second round.

In the second round bowlers will bowl one game and the top 10 bowlers with their four-game pins over average will advance to the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals one more game will be bowled and the top four will advance, based on their five-game pins over average total, to the stepladder finals.

In the stepladder finals the fourth seeded player will bowl against the third seed with the winner, based on pins over average, facing the second seed. The winner of that match will face the top seed for the championship.

Top prize in the competition is $10,000, second place $5,000, third $2,500 and fourth $1,000.

The action starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday and should conclude about 4 p.m.

Why not come out and watch the competition? Someone will win $10,000. There is no charge for spectators.
