POA CHALLENGE

 

Gerald Imhoff, 67, of Beverly Hills , captured the inaugural Pins Over Average (POA) Challenge Saturday at Airway Lanes in Waterford Township with a 248-216 victory over Joseph Canzoneri of Canton to capture the $10,000 first prize. Canzoneri settled for the runner-up prize of $5,000.

 

Imhoff, a 158-average bowler, qualified second for the stepladder finals after ending up 154 pins over average for the five games of qualifying and preliminary rounds leading to the finals. His actual scores were 213, 137, 194, 214 and 186 for an actual five-game total of 944.

 

In the stepladder semi-finals Imhoff beat Neal Chapman of Imlay City 227-172 to advance to the finals. Imhoff’s score was 69 pins over average and Chapman 17.

 

“It’s unbelievable. The 227 and 248 games I shot in the finals were among my best games of the season.” said the jubilant Imhoff. “I guess timing is everything.”

 

Canzoneri, 21, of Canton led the qualifying and preliminary rounds with games of 246, 237, 267, 267 and 225 for a 1,242 actual total which was 207 pin over his 207 average.

 

Chapman, 189 average, earlier defeated Nancy Grobbel, 172 average, of Bloomfield 235-178 to advance.

 

Chapman took home $2,500 and Grobbel $1,000.

 

Imhoff represented Bowlero Lanes in Royal Oak , Canzoneri Mayflower Lanes in Redford, Chapman Bowl One Lanes in Troy and Grobbel Thunderbird Lanes in Troy .

 

The event began with 88 bowlers, who qualified through their USBC certified league, bowling three games before the field was cut in half. After the fourth game the field was cut to the top 10 and finally to the top four after fives games to determine the stepladder finalists.

 

The Metro Detroit USBC Association, Western Wayne County USBC Association and the Bowling Centers Association of Southeastern Michigan teamed up in the program which brought excitement to USBC certified league bowling.

NATIONAL SENIOR BOWLING ASSOCIATION

 

Randy Schroeder of Ottawa , Ohio won the National Senior Bowling Association event at Five Star Lanes in Sterling Heights with a 217-212 triumph over Ron LeChevalier of Livonia .

 

Schroeder qualified fourth and proceeded to beat Ron Forton of Macomb Township 253-228, Lew Agius of Wyandotte 215-214 and top qualifier Mike LaRocca of New Hudson 257-189 to advance to the championship match. Schroeder took home the top prize of $1,000.

 

LeChevalier earned $500. He qualified sixth and defeated Joe Buffa of Macomb Township 278-257, Kevin Scott of Ferndale and Don Lichon of Frankenmuth 247-191.

 

Lichon and Gary Schwarze of Sterling Heights each shared top game honors with 300.

 

Oakland County was represented by Kevin Scott who cashed for $150, Jerry Owczarski of South Lyon $105, Jim Burton of Novi $105, Phil Horowitz of West Bloomfield $105, Julius Bierkamp of Ferndale $90, Joe Fitzsimmons of Waterford Township $90 and Chuck Saperstein of Birmingham $90.

 

The next NSBA event will be Saturday at Skore Lanes in Taylor .
