BUDWEISER MICHIGAN MAJORS

 

Ed Danner of Otter Lake won his first Budweiser Michigan Majors title with a 202-195 triumph over Brian Newcomb of Romulus at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights .

 

Danner was seeded first after a nine-game qualifying and semi-final score of 2,318, an average of 257. He has been competing in the Michigan Majors for 10 years.

 

“This was a long time coming.” said the emotional Danner. “It’s a great thrill to beat the best bowlers in the state.”

 

Danner took home the top prize of $1,000.

 

Newcomb was the top qualifier after six games with 1,564, an average of 260. In the three-game semi-final round he fell to the fourth seed for the stepladder finals.

 

Once in the stepladder he proceeded on his mission be defeating Mark Milasinovich of Oxford 257-237, Larry Walker of Garden City 255-247 and Carleton Chambers of Taylor 268-185 to advance to the championship match. He earned the second place check of $600.

 

Chambers took home $500, Walker $400 and Milasinovich $300.

 

There were three 300 games during the competition. They were bowled by Danner, Jim Lauricella of Sterling Heights and Jeff Hicks of Allen Park.

 

The next MMBA tournament will be March 21-22 at Parkway Lanes in Trenton .

NATIONAL SENIOR BOWLING ASSOCIATION

 

Joe Buffa of Macomb Township beat Dennis Korkoske of East Lansing 279-245 to capture the National Senior Bowling Association event at Country Lanes in Farmington .

 

Buffa qualified third and beat Eddie Mintz of Canton 204-181 and Dave Eatmon of Ferndale 248-225 to advance to the semi-final round. In the semi-final round he tied Mark Abele of Garden City at 221 and beat him 50-39 in the two-frame rolloff to advance to the championship round. Buffa took home the top prize of $1,000.

 

Korkoske qualified 20th and proceeded with triumphs over Ernie Molnar of Perrysburg, Ohio 250-213, Dave Tulak of Taylor 224-191, Erv Watson of South Lyon 226-180 and Rick Vittone of Canada 222-206 on the way to the championship match. Korkoske earned $500.

 

Oakland County was represented at the pay window by Jerry Owczarski of South Lyon for $150, Eatmon $150, Watson $150, Mike McCleskey of Southfield $110, Jim Burton of Novi $90, Ed Austreng of Waterford Township $90, Mark Hatchigian of Novi $90 and Dan Mayer of Waterford Township $90.
