MICHIGAN STATE SENIOR MASTERS

 

Ron Jonas of South Bend , Ind. won the second annual Michigan State Senior Masters at Royal Scot Bowl in Lansing Sunday when he defeated Richard Eiermann of Garden City 501-440 in the two-game total pins match to win the $2,500 first prize and the title. Eiermann settled for the second place check of $1,500.

 

Jonas qualified 18th with a six-game total of 1,403. In match play he remained undefeated with wins over Doug Evans of Southgate 482-417, Lance Williams of Sterling Heights 463-401, James Millen Jr. of Redford 431-411, Curtis Odom of Coldwater 492-473 and Leonard Cianciolo of Warren 485-451 en route to the championship match.

 

Jonas averaged 236.5 for the entire tournament. He also wins a paid entry into the 2010 USBC Senior Masters.

 

“I’m ecstatic with this win,” said the 52-year-old Jonas who bowls in Niles . “This is my top achievement even though I’ve won several local titles.”

 

“Since turning 50 I’ve began bowling in PBA Senior Regionals.”, he said.

 

Eiermann qualified fourth with 1,456. He beat Mike Braun of Fowler 484-483, Stephen Leonard of Woodhaven 454-438, Rick Capaldi of Canton 450-438 before falling to Leonard Cianciolo 447-422. In the loser’s bracket he rebounded with victories over Ray Johnson of Battle Creek 524-350, Kenneth Kossick of Commerce Township 527-437, avenged the loss to Cianciolo 468-337 before falling in the title match.

 

Cianciolo qualified eighth with 1,425. He remained in the winner’s bracket with victories over David Smith of Woodhaven 536-407, defending champion Mitch Jabczenski of Novi 500-451, Ken Kossick 430-412, Eiermann 446-421 before falling to Jonas 485-451. In the loser’s bracket he fell to Eiermann again 468-337 to get knocked out of the tournament. He settled for $1,000.

 

Kossick qualified 32nd with 1,359. In match play he beat Steve Fulton of Lansing 471-463 and Harry Sullins of Chesterfield Township 476-452 before falling into the loser’s bracket with a loss to Cianciolo 430-412. Once in the loser’s bracket he beat Joe Krajenke of Clinton Township 473-383, Fulton a second time 491-411, Curtis Odom of Coldwater 459-421 before being knocked out by Eiermann 525-437. He earned $750.

 

Top qualifier Fulton led qualifying by three pins with 1,511 with his top game of 278. He finished seventh after losing his first match to Kossick 471-463 before running off four wins over Paul Kwiecien of Lansing 513-456, Mike Beller of Brighton 506-415, Edward Mintz of Novi 467-419 and Rick Capaldi of Canton 484-483 before losing to Kossick for the second time 491-411. Fulton took home $400 and an additional $100 as high qualifier.

 

Joe Fitzsimmons of Waterford Township recorded the top game during qualifying with a 299. Joe Krajenke bowled a perfect 300 game during match play.

 

Other local bowlers who cashed were Mitchell Jabczenski Sr. for $300, David Silverman of Farmington Hills $175, Ed Austreng of Waterford Township $150 and Dan Mayer of Waterford Township $150.

 

The field of 113 bowlers averaged 216.3 during the six games of qualifying.

 

The top 32 qualifiers averaged 234.6 during qualifying and 224.5 in match play.

 

The Michigan State USBC Senior Masters Tournament is a USBC certified event operated by the Michigan State USBC Association.

BUDWEISER MICHIGAN MAJORS

 

Mark Milasinovich of Clinton Township won his first Budweiser Michigan Majors title with a match game victory over Ed Danner of Otter Lake at Parkway Lanes in Trenton .

 

Milasinovich qualified 15th and beat Jordan Born of White Lake , Nunzio Marino of Livonia and Dale Hofmeister of Essexville by winning the first two games in the best two out of three format to advance to the championship match.

 

In the championship match against Danner, Milasinovich won the first two games in the best three out of five 234-225 and 258-236 before Danner beat him 229-215. Milasinovich closed out the match with a convincing 236-185 win.

 

“This is just awesome,” said Milasinovich. “It is an honor to have my name banner hanging with all the great bowlers that have won this tournament.”

 

Danner was the top qualifier with a six-game total of 1,574, which included two perfect 300 games. In match play he beat Terry Haines of Dearborn Heights , Larry Walker of Garden City and Mike Calhoun of Wyandotte . Along the way he only lost one game prior to the final match.

 

“I just have to figure a way to close it out, hopefully next year.” Danner said, after finishing second for the second year in a row.

 

Milasinovich took home the top prize of $1,500 and Danner settled for $900.

 

Oakland County cashers were Jordan Born of White Lake for $200, Troy Stus of South Lyon $125 and Dan Kelsey of Novi $125.

NATIONAL SENIOR BOWLING ASSOCIATION

 

Ross Beers of Saginaw became the first bowler in three years to win back-to-back titles in the National Senior Bowling Association with a 213-180 triumph over John Thomasma of Kalamazoo at Five Star Lanes in Sterling Heights .

 

Beers qualified sixth, and then proceeded to beat Robert Michaux Jr. of Detroit 217-207, Steve Sears of Michigan Center 247-207 and Ralph Jennings of Detroit 235-234 to advance to the championship match.

 

Thomasma qualified 20th and won matches against Steve Scherle of Canada 210-203, Ed Mintz of Canton 208-190, John Pretari of Flat Rock 236-171 and James Millen Jr. of Redford 247-170 on his way to the title match.

 

Beers received the top prize of $1,000, while Thomasma settled for $500.

 

Local seniors doing well were Dan Mayer of Waterford Township for $150, Mike McCleskey of Southfield $115, Mike LaRocca of New Hudson $115, Larry Martinez of Waterford Township $95 and Phil Horowitz of West Bloomfield $70.
