MDUSBC MASTERS QUALIFYING

 

The Metro Detroit USBC Association Masters tournament qualifying wrapped up at Rosebowl Lanes in Roseville Sunday, Jan. 17 with Mike Norris Jr. of Melvindale leading the 10-game qualifying round with 2,481.

 

Norris averaged 248.1 for the two days of qualifying rounds. Five-game rounds of 1,309 and 1,172 propelled him to the lead. Norris started with the only 300 game of the qualifying rounds and never looked back forging a 58-pin lead over Jason Stephenson of Davison. Norris had games of 300-279-278-215-237-226-188-220-275-254. Norris will face Raymond Shepherd of Macomb in first round match play Saturday.

 

Stephenson had five-game qualifying blocks of 1,192 and 1,231 on Sunday to be seeded second. He faces Larry Franz of Redford .

 

Defending champion Paul Koehler, formerly of Roseville now of Stuart , Fla. , was unable to defend his title due to work commitments.

 

The entire 139 player field averaged 211.3, with the top 32 finalists averaging 231.2. Norris had to top game with 300 and top five-game block with 1,309.

 

Match play begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Jan. 23 at Rosebowl Lanes in the double elimination three-game match play format. The final match is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m.

 

Oakland County bowlers who are in the finals are Bob Chamberlain Jr. of Holly, Alan Pittman of Clarkston, Jeff Austreng of Waterford Township, Scot Woodward of Auburn Hills and Jason Battishill of Waterford Township.
