YEAR IN REVIEW

 

January – Paul Koehler of Roseville won the MDUSBC Masters with a final victory over Kurt Pilon of Warren for the title at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights . Randy Warnken of Clinton Township won his second Budweiser Michigan Majors title with a triumph over Tom Smallwood of Saginaw at Five Star Lanes in Sterling Heights . William Manley Jr. of Detroit won his first National Senior Bowling Association title over Rick Vittone of Canada at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park .

 

February – John Nolen of Waterford Township won one of the biggest tournaments in bowling when he won the televised United States Bowling Congress Masters Tournament in Las Vegas . In addition to the first place prize check he received a two-year PBA exemption extending the one-year one he received for winning the Regional Players Invitational. Larry Walker of Garden City won the MDUSBC Senior Masters at Classic Lanes in Rochester Hills beating Albert Amella III of Macomb . Walker finished as the runner-up in 2008. Ed Danner of Otter Lake won the Budweiser Michigan Majors at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights . Joe Buffa of Macomb won the National Senior Bowling Association event at Country Lanes in Farmington .

 

March – The Professional Bowlers Association announced that Detroit had been selected to host the World Series of Bowling in August and September at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park and Taylor Lanes in Taylor . Seven PBA events are to be held over a 38 day period. Events would include regular, senior and women’s tournaments. This will be the first time this has been attempted. Mitch Jabczenski Sr. of Novi won the inaugural Michigan State Senior Masters tournament at Airport Lanes in Jackson defeating Mike Motrinc of Harrison Township . Ken Lang of Eastpointe won his first National Senior Bowling Association title at Bowl One Lanes in Troy . Randy Warnken of Clinton Township won the Budweiser Michigan Majors Match Game Championship at Parkway Lanes in Trenton .

 

April – Detroit hosts the NCAA Women’s Bowling Championship at Superbowl Lanes in Canton . The MDUSBC Women’s Championship concluded at Cherry Hill Lanes in Dearborn Heights with many local keglerettes faring well. Sue Labiak won the MDUSBC Senior Queens at Cherry Hill Lanes. Airway Lanes in Waterford Township announced that the deal to sell the property was officially dead and the long standing local institution would remain as a bowling center and in the Benning family for many years to come. Dan Mayer of Waterford Township and Jeff Suma Sr. of Auburn Hills won Mid States Masters titles. Tom Smallwood of Saginaw won the Michigan State Masters at Airport Lanes in Jackson over Travis Raskey of South Lyon . Defending champion Jeff Austreng of Waterford Township finished third. Ken Wyatt of Sterling Heights won the Budweiser Michigan Majors event at Plaza Lanes in Plymouth . Dan Mytty of Livonia prevailed in the National Senior Bowling Association event at Century Bowl in Waterford Township .

 

May – Bill Haynes of Rochester Hills and Bob Frink of Washington teamed up to win the member/member doubles of the National Senior Bowling Association at Skore Lanes in Taylor beating Dave Eatmon of Ferndale and Phil Horowitz of West Bloomfield . The United States Bowling Congress convention was held in Reno , Nev. with Libbi Fletcher of Warren, president of the Metro Detroit USBC Association, being elected to the USBC Board of Directors. Jeff Roche of Dearborn won the Budweiser Michigan Majors event at Nortel Lanes in Monroe . Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park hosted the PBA Tour Trials with the top eight players receiving exemptions for the 2009-2010 season. Tom Smallwood of Saginaw earned one of the berths.

 

June – Nunzio Marino of Livonia and George Gohagen of Dayton , Ohio successfully defended their Budweiser Michigan Majors Doubles title at Lodge Lanes in Belleville . The MDUSBC announced the All-City team selections and several local bowlers earned nods on the prestigious teams. Included were Jeff Austreng of Waterford Township on the regular team; Mitch Jabczenski Sr. of Novi, Lawrence Richardson of Southfield, Dave Eatmon of Ferndale and Ed Austreng of Waterford Township on the senior men’s team; and Carol Davis of Lake Orion made the senior women’s team. B.J. Galloway of Alpena won the National Senior Bowling Association tournament at Merri Bowl Lanes in Livonia . Ken Wyatt of Sterling Heights won the Budweiser Michigan Majors at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park .
