MASTERS QUALIFYING
The
Metro Detroit USBC Association Masters tournament qualifying wrapped up at Astro
Lanes in
The
2006 MDUSBC Masters champion Ewald averaged 235.4 for the two days of qualifying
rounds. Five-game rounds of 1,124 and 1,230 propelled him to the lead. Ewald
shot a tournament high 299 in the first game of the second round and led by 49
pins over Ryan VanHecke of
VanHecke had five-game qualifying blocks of 1,150 and 1,135 on Sunday to be seeded second. He faces Troy Stus of South Lyon.
Defending
champion Eddie Grace of Howell is seeded ninth and will face Craig Nidiffer of

maximum field of 160 averaged 197.5, with the top 32 finalists averaging 216.5.
Ewald had the top qualifying block with 1,230 and shared top game honors with
Mike Calhoun of
Match play begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29 at Astro Lanes in the double elimination three-game match play format. The final match is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m.

The competition was conducted on the “Blue” pattern of the Red, White and Blue series of lane patterns developed by the United States Bowling Congress. of Lansing 259-203, Ken Wyatt of
Dufresne was the top qualifier with 2,208 which included a 300 and 299 game.
“This is just amazing,” said Schultz. “It’s been 10 years since my last win. I never thought I would win again at my age.” Schultz is 55 years old.
Warnken earned $600, Wyatt $500 and Manor $400.
